Does the word "society" in this context refer to a social gathering in the upper class? Or does it refer to society in general?

Here it refers to society in general! I suppose it's about the society she lives in. Her country, government, and its areas of influence. This does, however, include "high" or "upper society" since that's what she's regarded as part of, especially if she does marry rich. Ex: We all play a role in society. Ex: The structure of society is quite complex. Ex: Society frowns upon those who are ill mannered. => high society; ill mannered = without proper manners.
