According to the Dane Fine Art website, "modern art" is art that was created during the 18th century until the mid 20th century. This art was more commonly done on a canvas, such as drawing or painting. "Contemporary art" is current works of art where the artist is still alive. It also isn't limited to a canvas, like modern art is. It includes sculpting, architecture, graphic arts, etc. Ex: Van Gogh was known for his modern art, especially his well-known piece "The Starry Night." Ex: On the streets of Sioux Falls, you will see artwork created by contemporary artists.
