This is an employment term. It means to dismiss or release an employee temporarily or permanently due to a shortage of work. This often happens when business is not going well or the economy is experiencing a recession. Ex: I was laid off during the recession. Ex: Many of my coworkers were laid off during the pandemic. The company only called a few of them back later.
