A commission is a group of people officially employed to enable a particular function or work towards a certain purpose. It's similar in meaning to "committee" or "board." In the international setting, such as for international organizations, you will often see "Commission" in the name of the organization, like the European Commission here. The European Commission is the executive of the European Union, which means that it's in charge of initiating laws, enforcing EU laws, and managing EU policies. Ex: The UN is made up of many different commissions which serve many different purposes. Ex: The European Commission is introducing new financial laws related to economic sanctions.
