What does "de facto" mean? Is it even an English word?

Good question! "de facto" is actually of Latin origin and literally means "of fact." It means in effect or existing as such, but not intentionally. Ex: Our house became the de facto dinner party place for our friends. Ex: The park is de facto the main gathering place for the city kids. Ex: The city is de facto the tourist hub of the country.
