Generally speaking, "idea" and "inspiration" have similar meanings. However, an "idea" usually refers to a thought or suggestion for a potential action to be taken. Meanwhile, "inspiration" usually refers to the mental stimulation that leads to an action or the creation of something, which is usually creative. Thus, you will hear the word "inspiration" being used a lot when talking about the process behind the creation of art, music, literature, and so on. Ex: I was inspired by nature when I did this painting. Ex: I have a great idea for our homework assignment.
