An "acquaintance" is someone you know a bit, but they're not a friend. So if you met someone briefly and don't really hang out or become close, you'd be acquaintances. Work colleagues or contacts can be acquaintances, someone you bump into randomly and chat to at the mall, or maybe your child's friend's parents that you spoke to in the school hallway. There are many possibilities for acquaintances! Ex: I have an acquaintance who works at that hardware store. I can try to contact them if you need any assistance. Ex: A work acquaintance of mine invited me for drinks. Maybe we'll become friends. Ex: Oh, Tim and I are only acquaintances.
