Would it sound awkward if I say "tough day" instead of a "rough day?"

No! There is a small difference in nuance, but you can use either to mean that a day has been difficult. "Tough + [time period]" is usually used to define a situation where there is difficulty in accomplishing a task. "Rough + [time period]" is more general and means that things are not going "smoothly" and can also apply to situations where a person experiences bad luck. Ex: I had a tough week at the office. The deadline my boss set is very hard to meet. Ex: It's been a rough day. My train was late, and my coworkers were distracting me all the time after I got to work.
