Would it sound awkward if I say "famous" instead of "popular" in this context?

These words are slightly different! To be popular means to be well-received or liked by others. Being famous is slightly different; it indicates a higher level of recognition, usually at the public level. For example, a very cool or good-looking student in your class might be considered popular but not famous (as they would not be well-known outside of school). A well-known singer or actor, on the other hand, would be considered both popular AND famous. Ex: Mary was very shy and often bullied by the popular girls at school. Ex: After his song was used in a tv show, the singer became famous very quickly.
