To "get to the bottom" of something means to find an explanation or the true reason for something that isn't usually obvious or is hidden well. Ex: The investigators are trying to get to the bottom of what caused the fire. Ex: We'll get to the bottom of this. Ex: I've never gotten to the bottom of why she quit.
