"Testing ground" refers to the time, place, thing, or activity where something can be checked - or tested - to see if it will work before being brought into a larger scale. Ex: My first year of University was a good testing ground for deciding what I wanted to do after I graduated since I could try so many things. Ex: The company is a testing ground for the new business system. Then we can apply it to other businesses.
