A "mall" has many shops in one building. A "department store" is one shop with various items and goods, such as electronics, clothing, furniture, and sometimes groceries. In a mall, you'd get many shops selling these things separately. Like, a furniture shop, a clothing shop, and so on. Ex: Let's go to the mall! I need to get some clothing at one shop, and then look at another shop for some stationary! Ex: The department store I went to yesterday had EVERYTHING. I couldn't believe it.
