Can I say "recognized" instead of "noticed" in this context?

Yes, you can! Since Caillou had seen the bag before and it was familiar to him, you can say "recognised". If he hadn't seen it before, then "noticed" would be more appropriate. Ex: I noticed you got a haircut! Ex: My bedroom didn't look the same after I left for college. I could hardly recognize it. Ex: Is this a Pollock painting? I recognize the style of brushstrokes.
