I saw students call their math class "Algebra" in the American media. In this case, does "algebra" has the same meaning as "math?"

In American English, "algebra" and "math" are often used interchangeably. "Algebra" is the area of mathematics that deals with the use of symbols and using/manipulating those symbols as parts of formulas. If a calculation is being made, and letters are part of it, then that's "algebra" being used. Using "algebra" interchangeably with "math" is an American colloquialism. Ex: I think we have algebra today, but I'm not sure because I didn't look at the schedule. Ex: My dog ate my algebra homework, and I don't think the teacher will believe me.
