student asking question

Is it common in America to say the numbers with separate digits?

Native speaker’s answer

Rebecca

Correct. In North America, class names or codes with numbers in the title are spelled out individually. Thus, this is why the speaker says "Forest one oh one" instead of "Forest one hundred and one," which is what we typically say when reading out numbers. In particular "101" has become slang for any beginner or introductory course that teaches something. For example, if you are teaching a friend to bake for the first time, you can joke around and say that the class is called "Baking 101." Ex: I'm taking the courses Engineering 201 and Physics 203 this semester. => Engineering two oh one, physics two oh three. Ex: Calculus 101 is just an introductory class, so it should be easy.
