A "purse" is generally smaller than a "handbag". Some "purses" only carry your cards and cash to pay for things, and you can hold it in your hand without a strap. Other "purses" are a little bigger, hold a few more items, and sometimes have a strap on them. You usually use a "purse" for formal events, but it can also function as a wallet. A "handbag" can vary in size and usually carries various items. All handbags have a strap to put on your shoulder or over your chest. You use them for formal or informal events. Ex: Honey, I can't find my purse for the party tonight. Ex: Oh dear! I left my handbag at the cafe. I'll go back and get it quickly. Ex: Can you hold my phone while I look for something in my bag? Thanks.
