I am not really sure when to use "same" or "the same". Can you explain me why "the same" is used here?

"Same" is almost always used with the definite (specific) article "the" because it describes something specific as being identical to something else in almost all cases. There are uses for "same" that do not include "the" but do use a determiner which serves a very similar function of marking something as definite. Ex: Some people like pineapple on pizza. These same people also enjoy sweet chilly sauce. (the word "these" is the determiner that marks "people" as definite - the people from the previous sentence; it can be replaced with "the" and the meaning would stay the same) Ex: I like your suggestion about what color to use. I had the same idea. (typical use of "same")
