Would it change the meaning of the sentence if I omit "the" and say "I learned this hard way"?

It would sound awkward if "the" was omitted here because the expression itself is "to learn the hard way." Ex: I learned this lesson the hard way. Ex: Sometimes you have to learn things the hard way.
