Is there any differences between "rough" and "tough"?
These are similar words, but there are differences in meaning. "Rough" is often used to mean having an uneven or irregular surface; to not be smooth or level. It is often used to describe the physical appearance of something. In this case, however, Billie Eilish has used it mean that the bad guy she is speaking about likes to be careless and turbulent (which are also synonyms for uneven). "Tough" can be used to describe the texture of things like food (when something is dry and difficult to chew), but in this song, is used to describe the exterior or personality of a person: a tough guy is a man who is strong and not easily affected by emotions or injury. In this song, Billie Eilish has used both adjectives to paint the picture of a man who is strong, unaffected, and careless in his actions. Ex: He thinks he's a tough guy. Ex: I had a rough day at work today.
