Here, "go on" is a phrasal verb that means to proceed to do something, usually after something else. It can also mean "continue," "happen," or for something to start working. Ex: After graduating, she went on to be the best soccer player in the country. Ex: I can't go on living like this. => continue Ex: I'm not sure what went on last night. => happen Ex: The lights went on in the middle of the night.
