What is "common thread"? Is it a common expression?

A "common thread" refers to the same characteristic or theme found in multiple situations or people. This expression is not very common. Ex: The common thread between her and her friends is that they all went to the same high school. Ex: Ghosts appearing was a common thread in the author's books. All of her books had ghosts in them.
