"Upwards of X" is a formal way of saying "more than" or "above." They all mean basically the same thing! You can use "upwards of X" when you want to indicate that the quantity of something exceeds what is being mentioned. Ex: I have visited upwards of 30 countries in the last decade. Ex: She owned upwards of 10 houses in the city.
