To be "worse off for [something]" means to be disadvantaged by it and less fortunate, rather than benefit from it. On the other hand, one call also be "better off" for or with something. Ex: You were worse off with him, so I'm glad you broke up. Ex: You're better off without him. Ex: We're worse off for not treating the planet the way we should.
