Does "proximity" mean "distance"? Is there any reason of using "proximity" not "distance" in this situation?

"Proximity" does not mean "distance". "Proximity" specifically refers to how close someone or something is. Ex: She could smell her friend's perfume because of her close proximity. Ex: The proximity of their houses made it easy for them to see each other.
