「preexisting」は「existence」以前を意味します。つまり、何かの存在を別のものの存在と関連づけているわけですね。ここでは、このモチーフが以前から存在していたと言っています。 例: Many believe that dinosaurs preexisted humans.（恐竜は人間より先に存在していたと多くの人が信じている。） 例: We took preexisting songs and made them into new songs.（私たちは既存の曲を使って新しい曲を作った。） 例: People with preexisting conditions should be wary of taking this medication.（持病のある人は、この薬の服用に注意が必要です。）
