student asking question

What does it mean by "get a check" here?

teacher

Native speaker’s answer

Rebecca

Good question! In North American public schools, report cards have a section where teachers can checkmark a box (draw a "check" sign in an empty space or blank) to indicate if the student displays or demonstrates positive traits. Usually, the ability to work well/cooperate with others is included in this section. The speaker says "on your report card where it said "works well with others," did you ever get a check by that?" in a sarcastic way to show his opinion that the woman does not work well with others and is not a team player. You can use the expression "put/place/get a check[mark]" in similar situations in which you have to indicate that you meet the requirements or conditions of a form or checklist. Ex: Did you checkmark all the empty boxes? Ex: I placed a checkmark in the box that indicates "married" for my marital status.
