Good question! According to the government of Atlanta, the city was founded in 1837 as the end of the monumental Western & Atlantic railroad line. The city was first named Marthasville in honor of the governor's daughter, and then its name was soon changed to Atlanta, the feminine form of Atlantic (the name of the railroad). The railroad, in turn, was inspired by the Atlantic Ocean! So in a roundabout way, the city was named after the ocean after all! Ex: Atlanta, Georgia, is known for lush natural scenery. Ex: Atlanta was a central to the American civil rights movement and is known for being the birthplace of Martin Luther King Jr.
