What's the origin of the word "cool?" Since when it became so popular?

The origin of the word "cool" actually means "cold," but, in the 1930s, it started being used to describe something intensely good. Usually in relation to African-American vernacular and jazz circles when jazz broke out, and thus became popular! Ex: The ice cream is cool on your tongue. Ex: Why do you always look so cool? Ex: Jazz music is cool.
