A hot spring is a spring that geothermally heats water. An onsen is a type of hot spring in Japan, but it must be a certain temperature and contain a certain amount of minerals. Thus, you can consider an onsen to have much more stringent requirements it must meet before it can be considered an onsen. Ex: My favorite part of my trip to Japan was visiting an onsen. Ex: There is a natural hot spring in the mountains near my home.
