What does "behold" mean? In what circumstances could I use it? Also, is it a compound word?

"Behold" means to see or observe something, usually something that's impressive or remarkable. The origin of "behold" comes from a compound word of old English, but it's not a compound word in modern English! It's not used too frequently these days since it has a dramatic or poetic tone to it. It wouldn't sound odd if you used it, though. Sometimes it's even used in a joking manner. Ex: Behold! The new gaming console. Isn't it beautiful? => not serious Ex: Oh, I'd love to behold the northern lights one day.
