Can I say "return" instead of "give back" in this kind of context?

I can see why you'd think that! However, it doesn't quite suit the meaning or tone in this context. "Return" is much more formal and polite. And since the Pokemon are held captive, "return" implies that the Pokemon willingly went or were allowed to go for a certain period of time- rather than being held captive. Ex: Hey Norris! Thanks for looking after my dog this week. You can return him to me tomorrow. Ex: Thanks for letting me borrow your game. I'll return it this weekend! Ex: Please, return your rock climbing gear before you leave the gym. Ex: Give me back my cell phone! I never said you could use it.
